A 4TB hard drive and a 4TB SSD may look like comparable purchases until you compare HDD versus SSD costs properly. They offer the same stated capacity, but usually serve very different jobs and deliver sharply different value per terabyte. For bulk storage, the cheapest option is rarely the wrong answer. For an operating system, games library or active photo project, buying purely on £/TB can be a false economy.
The useful question is not simply whether SSDs cost more than HDDs. They do. The better question is how much extra you are paying per terabyte, what that premium changes in day-to-day use, and whether the capacity you need makes the premium sensible.
HDD versus SSD costs: start with £ per TB
Hard disk drives remain the clear winner on raw capacity value. A conventional 3.5-inch internal HDD, particularly at 8TB, 12TB, 16TB or higher, normally offers substantially lower £/TB than a SATA SSD or NVMe drive. This gap becomes more important as capacity rises.
That is because HDD capacity is comparatively cheap to manufacture. A single high-capacity drive can hold a large archive without needing expensive flash memory. SSDs use NAND flash, and their cost climbs quickly when you move from 1TB to 2TB, 4TB and beyond. NVMe SSDs may add a further premium for a faster interface and controller.
When comparing listings, divide the current price by usable marketed capacity. A £120 8TB HDD works out at £15/TB. A £120 2TB SSD is £60/TB. The SSD is not automatically poor value - it is four times the price per terabyte because it is selling speed, compactness and silence as well as storage.
Headline prices can distort this. A 1TB SSD at £55 may feel affordable, while an 8TB HDD at £130 looks expensive. Yet the HDD gives eight times the capacity for a little over twice the outlay. For family backups, media libraries and NAS storage, that larger drive may be the better-value purchase by a wide margin.
What the SSD premium actually buys
An SSD has no moving parts. That gives it near-instant access times, much faster file handling in many workloads, silent operation and better resistance to knocks than a spinning hard drive. An NVMe SSD fitted directly to a motherboard is generally faster again than a SATA SSD, especially when moving large files or loading demanding applications.
The difference is obvious when the storage is used actively. Windows starts faster, games load more quickly, software opens with less waiting, and a laptop feels more responsive. For video editing, photography and development work, an SSD can reduce the time spent opening projects, generating previews and copying current files.
But speed depends on the task. Copying a large video from one slow USB drive to another will not suddenly become fast because the destination is an NVMe SSD. Internet speed does not improve. Nor will an SSD make an older processor or limited RAM disappear as a bottleneck.
For many buyers, the sensible split is simple: use an SSD for files and programs you use often, then use an HDD for everything that needs space but not instant access. This avoids paying SSD-level £/TB for years of photos, downloaded films or backup copies that may only be opened occasionally.
When an HDD is the cheaper and smarter choice
HDDs are still difficult to beat for large, stationary storage. They make most sense where capacity matters more than response time.
A desktop backup drive, for example, does not need to load a document in a fraction of a second. What matters is fitting all the family laptops, phone photos and important folders onto one drive, ideally with room for future backups. A higher-capacity external HDD commonly gives more breathing room for the same budget than an external SSD.
They are also a natural fit for media archives. If you keep a large collection of RAW images, home videos, music, PC installers or recorded TV, compare 8TB and above first. The middle and upper HDD capacities often produce the strongest £/TB figures, although a deal can make a smaller or larger size the better buy on a given day.
For NAS users, the calculation goes beyond price. NAS-specific HDDs are designed for sustained operation, vibration management and multi-drive environments. They can cost more per TB than basic desktop models, but choosing the cheapest consumer drive for a multi-bay NAS may not be worthwhile if it has an unsuitable workload rating or warranty. Check whether the model uses CMR recording if predictable write performance matters, particularly for RAID rebuilds and heavier writes.
An HDD is less attractive in a frequently moved laptop, a games console that supports SSD upgrades, or a working drive carried between jobs. Moving parts make it more vulnerable to drops, and the noise, heat and slower access can become noticeable.
When paying more for an SSD is justified
For a new PC build, an SSD should normally be the primary drive. A modest 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD provides enough room for Windows, applications and a reasonable game library without making the whole build feel constrained. The £/TB is higher, but the benefit is used every time the machine starts and every time a program loads.
Gamers should weigh capacity against the size of their installed library. A 1TB SSD is often enough for a rotating selection of games, but modern titles can exceed 100GB each. If you want dozens installed at once, a 2TB SSD may be better value than two smaller drives, provided its £/TB is sensible. Keep less-played games and recordings on an HDD if your setup allows it.
Portable storage is another case where SSD costs can be easier to justify. A compact external SSD is lighter, silent and more resistant to accidental knocks than an external hard drive. For photographers transferring work in the field, students carrying coursework, or anyone travelling with important files, that practical advantage can outweigh the higher cost per TB.
There is also a difference between SATA and NVMe SSD value. SATA SSDs are limited by the older SATA connection and are often cheaper, while NVMe drives offer higher potential speeds. For general office use, web browsing and many older systems, a good-value SATA SSD can be all you need. Pay extra for a faster NVMe model when your motherboard supports it and your workload will use it - large file transfers, current games, creative work or a performance-focused PC.
Capacity changes the value calculation
The cheapest drive in total pounds is rarely the cheapest per terabyte. Small-capacity SSDs can be disproportionately expensive per TB, while very high-capacity SSDs may carry a premium because they are specialist products. HDD pricing tends to improve at larger capacities, but the best point is not fixed.
Avoid buying a drive that is technically cheap but nearly full on day one. SSDs need free space for comfortable day-to-day use, and backups need room for growth and version history. A 1TB drive that will be full after moving existing files may cost less now but lead to a rushed second purchase later.
This is where current price comparisons matter. Storage pricing moves with promotions, stock levels and capacity variants. The same product line can have a 2TB model with a much better £/TB than the 1TB version, while a temporary discount can make an otherwise premium 4TB SSD competitive. Comparing the exact capacity, condition, interface and drive type prevents a misleading bargain.
Do not compare unlike-for-like listings
Before judging a deal, check whether you are comparing an internal drive, external drive, bare HDD, SATA SSD or NVMe SSD. An external drive includes an enclosure and cable, so it will not match the £/TB of an equivalent internal model. Likewise, a cheap USB hard drive may be ideal for backup but unsuitable as a NAS drive or internal desktop replacement.
Condition matters too. A renewed or refurbished drive can lower the upfront price, but buyers should account for warranty length, previous use and the value of the data being stored. For replaceable media files, a lower-cost renewed drive may be acceptable. For irreplaceable family photos or business records, new drives and a separate backup strategy are usually the more sensible choice.
Brand alone should not decide the purchase. Compare the exact model, warranty, interface, capacity and intended workload. A familiar brand can still be overpriced, while a less-prominent listing can be poor value if it uses an older connection or has a weak warranty.
A practical buying rule
Buy an HDD when your priority is the most capacity for your money. Buy an SSD when the files, games or software need to feel fast, are carried around regularly, or sit inside your main computer. If you need both speed and a lot of space, do not force one drive to do everything: a smaller SSD plus a larger HDD is often the best-balanced spend.
Before checking out, compare the current £/TB against similar capacities and drive types rather than relying on a crossed-out price. The best storage deal is the one that gives you enough space for the job, at a price that still makes sense when the next year of files arrives.
